How can a school where every student’s linguistic background intersects with Spanish be structured to center student experiences? The Pan American International High School at Monroe in the Bronx, NY was founded in 2008, serves 100% Hispanic recently arrived immigrant and refugee students in grades 9 – 12, and “helps students develop their English language proficiency, gain real-world experiences, and enrich their native language capabilities.” In this visit, participants will examine resources from the school, hear from students and staff, and observe classrooms in order to surface the instructional practices and structures in place to support students in their home language and in English. Participants will see how aspects of the Internationals Approach, such as heterogeneity, collaboration, and project-based learning come to life so that students can learn language and content in all classes. Visitors will also debrief and reflect on what they can take back with them to their own respective school communities.
