How can teachers develop experiential, project based learning that supports students mastery of content while allowing them to apply the language they have learned? Flushing International High School in Queens, NY was founded in 2004, serves 100% recently arrived immigrant and refugee students in grades 9 – 12, and “through rigorous instruction and rich experiences, empowers collaborative critical thinkers to be successful members of the community.” In this visit, participants will examine resources from the school, hear from students and staff, and observe classrooms in order to surface the instructional practices and structures in place that help build an authentic, experiential learning environment. Participants will see how project-based learning comes to life so that students can apply language and content in a meaningful way. Visitors will also debrief and reflect on what they can take back with them to their own respective school communities.
