How can a newcomer academy be structured to foster inclusion for Multilingual Learners while preparing them to be college-ready upon graduation? Richmond High School International Academy in Richmond, CA, was founded in 2018. The Academy serves 100% recently arrived immigrant and refugee students in grades 9 – 12, and incorporates project based learning along with culturally relevant practices to engage students. In this visit, participants will examine resources from the academy, hear from students and staff, and observe classrooms in order to surface the instructional practices and academy structures in place to support students. Participants will see how aspects of the Internationals Approach, such as heterogeneity, collaboration, and project-based learning come to life so that students can learn language and content in all classes. Visitors will also debrief and reflect on what they can take back with them to their own respective school communities.
